Scottish Cup throwback: Motherwell 1-2 St Johnstone

Let’s look back to a memorable Scottish Cup encounter against Saturday afternoon’s opponents Motherwell.

Taking place in February 2007, we would book our ticket to the last four of the competition thanks to a 2-1 victory at Fir Park.

Peter ‘Peaso’ MacDonald opened the scoring when his strike looped over goalkeeper Graeme Smith and we held our one-goal advantage through until the break.

There had been other chances to extend the lead in the opening 45 minutes with Martin Hardie, in particular, going close with a header from Goran Stanic’s cross.

Jason Scotland got his header spot on in the 72nd minute, however, to provide breathing space as the match entered its closing stages.

Ross McCormack did pull a goal back for the hosts in the closing stages but resolute defending from the Perth rearguard ensured that we advanced to the semi-final.
