St Johnstone WFC: Ayr (A) preview

St Johnstone WFC are back in action this weekend when they travel to Ayr United on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 2:30pm at Townhead Park in Cumnock and Saints will be aiming to produce another positive result after defeating Rossvale in dramatic fashion last weekend in a 3-2 thriller.

Niamh Irvine netted the winning goal last Sunday with Olivia Hurrell and Steffi Simson also on the scoresheet and Saints are now level on points with Rossvale.

Niamh sat down with the webiste to preview this weekend's action.

"It was a massive win for us last weekend," she explained. "We were disappointed with a draw against Rossvale last time out so we were all buzzing to get the win this time.

"The performance was good! It definitely wasn’t the best we have played but we improved as the game went on. I was more impressed with the whole squad's work rate and determination to get the win.

"It was a really open game and it could have went either way so we had to dig in and work hard. Something I feel we may have been lacking in other games this season."

The victory was the first of 2025 for Saints and Josh Henderson's side are hungry for more.

Niamh continued: "It was our first home game of 2025 so we were determined to get the win. That’s the last four home games undefeated now so we’ve been trying hard to make Riverside a tough place for teams to come to.

"It’s very important we can continue and improve on our form, we have some big games in the next few weeks so hopefully we can get some momentum going into the second half of the season.

"It is another big game this weekend. A long trip down to Ayr. It’s a really narrow pitch this weekend and we know Ayr have some quality players who can cause problems, so for us it’s all about starting on the front foot and trying to get an early goal.

"Ayr will be looking to take points of course and trying to close the gap to us. There’s no doubt we can put another good performance in and we’ve added to our squad since last time we played them so we’re all really looking forward to the game."

On her goal last weekend, Niamh added: "It was a great feeling. I don’t score often at all so to grab the winner in the last five minutes was amazing and to have my family at the game made it even better.

"The girls worked so hard the whole game so just to grab the three points was the best part! Rachel’s put a great cross in which she does every week and I’ve made a run and managed to get on the end of it. It was a great feeling."
