Preview | Galatasaray (H)

12th August 2021

It has been over one and a half years since we last welcomed fans into a packed out McDiarmid Park. Supporters will witness their double cup winners take on former UEFA Cup winners Galatasaray.

After last Thursday’s heroics, Saints are only 90 minutes away from creating history by confirming European football until December.

Last week Ali McCann proved himself to be one of the hottest prospects in Scottish football after winning the midfield battle against the likes of former Barca and Atletico man Arda Turan and Turkish international Taylan Antalyali. Zander Clark took Europe by storm after pulling off multiple magnificent saves, denying both ex-Liverpool player Ryan Babel and veteran striker Mbaye Diagne.

Saints shocked the Lions and the world in the 55th minute. Chris Kane made a marauding run towards Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who failed to deal with a pass back.  The one-time Copa America winner grabbed the former Dumbarton loanee’s jersey and pulled him to the ground. The ref pointed to the spot and sent the five-time Super Lig champion off.

Double winning captain Jason Kerr stepped up to the plate and thundered the ball home. Perth’s own St Johnstone were ahead in a match against Turkey’s most successful club. The Turks would equalise two minutes later but that didn’t dampen the spirits of Callum Davidson’s men.

After putting in arguably one of the best performances in St Johnstone’s European history, they were rightfully praised by those across the UK and Turkey.

The history-making side will be looking to continue the fairytale and with the backing of the Saints faithful they will no-doubt put in another spectacular performance.

The Saints went to hell and back, now it’s Galatasaray's turn.

Welcome to Tulloch!
