Hearts Match Preview

We welcome Hearts to McDiarmid Park for our final cinch Premiership fixture of 2022.

Last time out

Saints

Saints six game undefeated run came to an end as they lost 4-1 to league leaders Celtic in Glasgow. The hosts opened the scoring on 14 minutes courtesy of a Reo Hatate deflected strike. Kyogo then scored from close range four minutes later to double the Hoops advantage.

Kyogo got his second and Celtic’s third of the afternoon five minutes from half time with another close-range finish. The Hoops then added a fourth seven minutes into the second half as Hatate got his second of the afternoon.

Drey Wright scored a consolation for Saints on 67 minutes as he got a second bite of the cherry to slot the ball beyond Joe Hart.

David Turnbull was sent off after late on in the game when he caught Remi Matthews in the face with a high boot.

Hearts

Hearts come into the game after sharing the spoils with Dundee United at Tannadice. United took the lead on the 20 minute mark thanks to a Steven Fletcher strike. Hearts would level the game through Michael Smith just before half time.

The home side came out firing at the start of the second half and restored their lead almost immediately when Dylan Levitt tucked his strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Lawrence Shankland continued his fine scoring form by converting a late penalty seeing both sides leave Tannadice with a point.

Wednesday night could spell the return of former Saints goalkeeper and cup double winner, Zander Clark, after Craig Gordon suffered a double-leg break.

Manager’s Thoughts:

“I think against Celtic we had a go in the first half, we tried to press high and when we got it wrong we were exposed. I was disappointed in how we lost a few of the goals, they were simple passes in behind that we could have dealt with better.

“I thought the lads responded well in the second half. Last year we could have let our heads go but we stayed composed and kept our shape well.

“However, we have to look at the bigger picture and playing the teams around us, starting again against Hearts this Wednesday night. We haven’t played at home in a while so it will be good to get back to McDiarmid Park in front of our own fans.

“Hearts are a very good team. Going on our previous game they’re possibly the toughest team we have come up against. It’s always a battle and I expect this to be no different. We want to finish the year with a win and send our fans home happy.”

Dan Phillip's Thoughts:

“Last time we faced them it was a very tough game, both teams had chances in the match so it should be similar this time. We have to make sure we prepare well.

“Celtic was always going to be a tough place to go, we were on a fantastic run before we faced them, so it is important we get back to that form and that starts against Hearts.

“This game gives us a chance to get back playing at McDiarmid, it has been a while so it will be nice to play in front of our home fans again.

“Every game is tough this season but we believe in ourselves and we will go into Wednesday with confidence.”
