SCOTS GIRLS LOSE OUT TO UKRAINE
26th July 2016
Scotland Women’s attempt to reach the UEFA European Women’s Championship in Finland next year ended tonight when they went down 1-0 to Ukraine at McDiarmid Park.
Anna Signeul’s side needed to win the match to be in with a chance of reaching the play-offs for the glamour tournament but despite having plenty of possession throughout the game they were unable to recover from the loss of an early goal.
Before kick-off presentations were made to three of the Scottish girls – Shelley Kerr, Suzanne Grant and Meggan Sneddon – to mark their achievement in gaining 50 caps for their country but there was little to smile about just nine minutes into the game when the Ukrainians took the lead.
Valentyna Kotyk was allowed to get a cross in from the right touchline and Daria Apanashchenko managed to bring the ball under control before prodding it home from six yards. Try as they might, the Scotland girls could not turn possession into clear cut chances or goals and they were left to rue the loss of the early goal.
