Sir Alex Ferguson: Geoff did an incredible job
1st August 2024

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Geoff Brown’s stewardship of St Johnstone Football Club – saying that he has done an “incredible job”.
Of course, Sir Alex played for the club for four seasons in the 1960s and famously scored a hat-trick against Rangers in December 1963. He would later return to Perth as manager of Manchester United for the official opening of McDiarmid Park in 1989.
It was 1986 – a time when we were in a precarious financial position, operating in a run-down stadium at Muirton Park whilst languishing towards the depths of Scottish football – when local businessman Geoff first got involved with St Johnstone FC.
Indeed, Geoff would quickly plant the foundations for growth – including that move to McDiarmid - and provided the platform which allowed us all to savour unparallelled joy both on and off the field of play.
Following the completion of the sale of his controlling interest in St Johnstone Football Club to Adam Webb, Geoff will now be honoured at Monday evening’s Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen.
He will be made Life President of St Johnstone and the Main Stand at McDiarmid Park will be renamed the Geoff Brown Stand. He will also be recognised by Scottish football officials.
Sir Alex said: “I wish Geoff had been at St Johnstone when I was there as he did an incredible job in maintaining the club and its reputation and ensured that the club was recognised as one of the really good clubs in Scotland. I wish him all the best.”
