Rangers Match Preview

Saints host Rangers this Saturday live on Sky Sports with a 12.30pm kick-off.

LAST TIME OUT

SAINTS

Max Kucheriavyi scored a dramatic late double as Saints came from two goals down to earn a point against Dundee in the first Tayside Derby of the season at McDiarmid Park.

Saints started brightly but Dundee soon took control of the game and they were rewarded with their pressure as they took the lead on 35 minutes when Amadou Bakayoko headed home from 12 yards.

Ricki Lamie doubled Dundee’s lead on 58 minutes as he headed home an Owen Beck corner.

Chris Kane’s strike hit the crossbar on 77 minutes as the Perth side looked to get back into the match. Saints pulled a goal back with 8 minutes remaining when Kucheriavyi got on the end of a Graham Carey cross.

The Ukrainian midfielder then completed the comeback deep into stoppage time as he slid in at the back post to convert a Luke Robinson cross.

STEVEN MACLEAN PRESS CONFERENCE

We had a bounce game and 2 really hard weeks of training during the international break which was really good. It’s still a new group so it was a perfect chance to bed the new boys in. We’re fresh and raring to go for the game on Saturday.

It will be a big test. Rangers come into the game off the back of a bad result so they will be looking to put things right. We will be ready for it and looking forward to the challenge.

Speaking to the staff, we can all tell the levels in training are improving and going up every day. I think from where we were pre-season till now is night and day. Win lose or draw at the weekend we will keep improving. I’m looking forward to progressing with this squad and I think we can get good results going forward as aa group.

With injured players coming back, there’s a really good competition for places which I think was shown in the Dundee game. Max Kucheriavyi came on and scored 2, Chris Kane came on and did really well also. The players know if they’re not playing well they will be out the team which I think will only spur them on.

We will try impose ourselves, implement our shape and try take the game to Rangers. We realise Rangers will need to be slightly off their best but if we do our jobs and stick to the game plan we will give ourselves a great chance of taking something from the game.

JAMES BROWN PRESS CONFERENCE

It’s a big game and we have had a few weeks to prepare for it so we’ve been able to get out on the training pitch. The boys don’t really like having many free weekend, we just want to be out there and picking up points.

It was a good chance with a new squad to create relationships and gel together. Obviously we look to take that forward and start to kick on.

We have to take heart from the closing game against Dundee and the Celtic performance was very good. I think it will be natural to have highs and lows throughout the season. It’s up to the older lads to help the new players bed in and get them to hit the ground running.

I’m confident in the group we’ve got. It’s easy saying that but we need to go out and do it on the pitch. The manager, coaching and players are doing everything they can to get it right.

Rangers are a very good team and we know we will need to be at our very best to take anything from the game.
