Rangers Scottish Cup Preview

Saints host Rangers in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup this Saturday live on Viaplay.

Last time out

Saints

Second half goals from Jamie Murphy and Connor McLennan could not prevent Saints from slipping to a fifth successive defeat as Callum Davidson’s side were beaten 4-2 by Livingston at McDiarmid Park.

A brace from Stephen Kelly had the Lions 2-0 up within 15 minutes and then James Penrice flicked home a third 6 minutes before half time to give the Lions a three-goal cushion.

Saints made a triple change at half time and the changes had an impact as Jamie Murphy pulled a goal back for Saints on 65 minutes. Saints got a second goal 2 minutes later as Connor McLennan tapped home at the back post.

However, Livingston ended any hopes of a comeback 9 minutes from time when Penrice got his second of the afternoon as he lashed his strike high into the net to seal the win for the West Lothian side.

Rangers

Kemar Roofe's first goal of the season sent Rangers into the Viaplay Cup final to face Celtic as Aberdeen were overcome in an extra-time thriller.

The striker converted fellow substitute Scott Wright's low cross in the 94th minute to give Rangers the lead for the first time at Hampden.

Aberdeen had led through Bojan Miovski's clipped shot past Allan McGregor but Ryan Jack's deflected strike had levelled matters by the time Dons captain Anthony Stewart was sent off late in stoppage time.

Managers Thoughts

We know the first half against Livingston wasn’t acceptable. We have had a really difficult run of games and we wanted to take more from the game against Livi.

We have been conceding really poor goals which has been costing us games. That’s the key to turning things around for me, is to stop conceding sloppy goals

It will be a very tough game against Rangers as you would expect. It’s up to myself and the players to give our fans something to cheer and get behind. We will need to get stuck in and try make it an exciting cup tie.

I’m looking for the appetite and energy I know we have in that squad. If we can bring that I will be much happier and we can hopefully progress to the next round.

Nicky Clark's Thoughts

It’s a game myself and the boys are looking forward to. Cup competitions are something you always want to do well in but we know it will be a tough game.

We are going through a difficult period at the moment but the game this weekend is a brilliant chance to turn things around. We know it’s down to us as soon as we cross that white line to implement the changes we need to.

We can take a lot of confidence having beaten Rangers at McDiarmid Park this season already. It’s a difficult task but one we know we can achieve. We want to push on and get as far through the competition as we can and that starts on Saturday.
