Rangers Match Preview

Saints welcome Rangers this Sunday for our penultimate home game before the World Cup break.

Last time out.

Saints look to make it 3 wins in a row after a 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock last weekend. The only goal of the game came after 4 minutes as Stevie May’s strike trickled past Zach Hemming after it took a deflection off Ash Taylor’s legs.

Saints thought they had been reduced to ten men just after the hour mark when James Brown was shown a red card for a tackle on Liam Donnelly. However, it was eventually downgraded to a yellow by referee Craig Napier following a lengthy VAR review.

The Ayrshire side thought they had levelled the match with 13 minutes remaining when Donnelly headed the ball into the net. However, Napier chalked the goal off for a foul in the box and the decision stood following another VAR review.

Rangers look to bounce back from another disappointing European performance midweek against Ajax. In league duties the Ibrox side came from a goal behind to easily sweep aside Aberdeen in a 4-1 victory. Goals from Colak, Lundstram, Tavernier and Morelos ensured the 3 points would stay in Glasgow.

Ryan McGowan’s thoughts:

“Rangers are a good team, they will be a very tough test. They are at the top end of the league for a reason. I don’t think their European form matters, you can see how strong they perform in the league.

“We performed well at home against Celtic, we will be looking to replicate that this Sunday. We have been in a good run of form lately so hopefully we can continue it.

“We are aiming to get further up the table, to do that we have to try and pick up as many points as possible from games, especially at home. This game is no different.”

Callum Davidson’s thoughts:

“I feel quietly confident going into Sunday’s match. We have been picking up points despite not being at out best.

“We also have a few of the inured players back and available for selection this Sunday, Jamie Murphy being one of them. It will be difficult to even pick the 18-man squad, never mind the starting 11.

“I don’t look into their Champions League form too much. Ranger’s league form has been excellent, they have only lost to Celtic this season so we know how difficult a test Sunday will be.”
