Our thanks to cup double winner Callum Booth
24th May 2024
Cup-double winner Callum Booth departs St Johnstone with the best wishes of everyone at the club.
Callum, an experienced defender, joined us in September 2019 and instantly operated with professionalism and consistency.
He would play a key role in our incredible cup-double winning season in 2021, starting – and playing the full game - in both the League Cup final against Livingston and the Scottish Cup final against Hibs.
Always popular with the supporters, Callum’s determination in the build-up to the winner in that Scottish Cup final will always be remembered fondly. His quick-fire double tackle on the left side of the pitch allowed the ball to be delivered for Shaun Rooney to head home.
Latterly, Callum’s career at the club was interrupted by injury and he was subsequently sent on loan to League Two side Spartans.
He made 79 appearances in total for the club, starting 69 of those, coming off the bench on 10 occasions and scoring once.
“It was a hugely successful time and I’ve only got fond memories,” Callum said.
“My appearances probably don’t reflect the time I was at the club. I had a few unhappier times being injured and that part of it was not great, but it was still amazing times for me.
“I have some really amazing memories. Probably the best I’ve ever had in football – without doubt winning the two cups and the European games. I was actually watching the Galatasaray highlights with my little boy the other day.”
Callum will never forget winning both the League Cup and Scottish Cup in the same season with the Saints.
“We had a good team, don’t get me wrong,” he laughed. “But even now you think: ‘How did we manage to do that?’
“Everything just seemed to click into place those last few months. So many players better than me have played in Scotland for years and not one a cup, never mind two. It was such an amazing achievement that will be remembered for years to come – and rightly so.”
On those famous tackles which kick-started the build-up to the Scottish Cup opener, he smiled: “Two good tackles. I’m not the quickest but I usually get my timing right with slide tackles!
“Big Rooney popped up like he always did that season to score. I get so happy when I think about it. You need still need to pinch yourself sometimes when you think you’ve won the double.”
He concluded: “The fans were always good with me. I have only good things to say about the club.”
We will announce a full squad update in due course.
