Oludare Olufunwa Signs For Saints
4th August 2023
Oludare Olufunwa signs on a two-year contract after leaving Liverpool in the summer.
Olufunwa, 22, can play centre back or right back and is comfortable in either position.
Having risen through the Southampton youth academy, the defender was snapped up by English giants Liverpool.
Olufunwa made over 30 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League 2 campaign last season.
Olufunwa described his decision to move to St Johnstone:
“I am delighted to get here and get settled down. I met all the boys yesterday and they seem a good group of lads. I am excited for the first game of the season.
“I know Scottish football, it is a very good standard with some big teams in the league.
“I spoke to the gaffer before I came in and he explained how this would be a good step for me and my career. The move made sense.
“I came through at Southampton and then moved to Liverpool last summer. For me it is probably one of the biggest clubs in the world. It was a great experience and I have to thank everyone there for what they did for me. They improved me as a player and as a person.
“The standard in training has been really high, all the boys look very sharp.
“I have been playing against Dan Phillips from quite a young age up. It has been good to see him again and he has helped me to integrate with the rest of the lads.
“I am comfortable at right back or centre back. The fans can expect to see a lot of passion from me and I will give everything when I have that shirt on.
“I want to play and win as many games as possible and help us have a good campaign.”
Steven MacLean spoke of his delight with his new addition:
"I am delighted to get Dare over the line.
“He’s a big lad, he’s quick and strong and he’s hungry.
“He’s had a few injuries in his career so that’s probably why he’s not kicked on as much already.
"I feel like this is the perfect place for him to develop and compete for minutes."
Olufunwa will wear the number 17 shirt and is available for selection immediately.
