MY SAINTS XI | With Chris Millar

15th April 2020

Wednesday 15 April 2020

We're reaching out to some of our best-known Saintees to ask them what their Saints XI would be and next up is former Saints midfielder and club legend Chris Millar!

Chris signed for Saints in the summer of 2008 on a free transfer from Greenock Morton and he was an integral part of the 2008/09 promotion-winning side.

That wasn't the only success that Chris had at the Club. Top-six finishes, European qualifications and victories, and of course the Scottish Cup triumph in 2014.

He stayed at the Club for 10 years, leaving in the summer of 2018 to rejoin Morton. He had his testimonial match that July against Aberdeen at McDiarmid Park, with Derek McInnes (who signed Midgey for Saints) in charge of the Dons.

This is Midgey's Saints XI of players he's played with!

GK: Alan Mannus - This is a tough one for me as there are three great keepers so need to mention them all.

Old boy Alan Main when I first came was a top goalie and brilliant about the dressing room.

Zander was just a kid but obviously he has developed into a fantastic keeper with a massive future ahead of him.

I have to go with Big Alan Mannus though. Scottish Cup-winning 'keeper, the hardest working goalie I have seen and a gentleman off the park.

RB: Dave Mackay - Without a doubt. Scottish Cup-winning skipper and the most consistent player I played with. A fantastic leader on and off the pitch and a player that could play in any side. Could do everything and should have won caps at international level.

CB: Steven Anderson - Says it all that he is the record appearance holder and scored the first goal in the Club's greatest game. A defender first and foremost and always hated losing goals even in training. A legend on a Christmas night out as well!

CB: Frazer Wright - Another of the Scottish Cup-winning side. Uncompromising defender who would kick his granny to get the win. Great in the air and horrible to play against. A real leader in the changing room. Had Ciftci on toast in that Cup Final!

LB: Brian Easton - I could have gone for Callum Davidson but had to choose one of my best mates in football. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like big Easty. As a player would have him all day. Good engine, composed on the ball and a consistent performer. One of the games great characters.

CM: Jody Morris - A massive influence on me at Saints. Always seemed to have time on the ball and a great leader and skipper. Technically gifted and a player that made the right decision in possession all the time. Great mate off the park as well.

CM: Murray Davidson - Always felt we complimented each other’s game so well. Great box-to-box midfielder, unbelievable in the air and always good for a goal. Never seen a player who loved a tackle so much with his go-go gadget legs! Mad as a brush as well and a brilliant team mate.

CM: Paul Sheerin - Nuts was coming to end of his career when I first signed but immediately a player that stood out on and off the pitch. A wand of a left foot! I will never forget his goal against Dundee. Brilliant footballer and a player I looked up to.

LW: Danny Swanson - One of the most technically gifted players I played with. Unbelievable feet, great finisher and could spot a pass from anywhere. Great football brain and when on his game absolutely unplayable.

ST: Stevie May - His break through season was a revelation and we would not have had that season without his goals. He was ruthless that year. Strong, quick and so greedy! Everything you wanted in a striker. And of course May 17. He couldn't not be in!

ST: Steven MacLean - One of the first names on my team sheet. A player who makes other players play better around him. Brilliant at linking the game and always made demands of everyone about him. We had so many leaders in the Scottish Cup-winning team and he was one of them. And that second goal in the final epitomised his attitude. Fantastic teammate and player.

SUBSTITUTES:

Zander Clark - A brilliant goalkeeper and will be a Scotland internationalist in the future.

Callum Davidson - His career speaks for itself. Brilliant professional and coach.

Liam Craig - One of the most natural finishers from midfield I played with and a great professional.

David Wotherspoon - So versatile. He can play anywhere along the midfield and technically excellent.

Peter MacDonald - One of the game's characters and a brilliant finisher. Great about the dressing room as well and I was always on the end of his pranks!

Fran Sandaza - One thing on his mind whenever he got the ball, score. Always popped up with big goals.

A big thank you to Midgey for giving us his all-time Saints team. We'll be asking more well-known Saintees for theirs in the coming weeks!
