A farewell from Remi Matthews

I’ve absolutely loved my time at St Johnstone. I was thrown in at the deep end when I got here and had a game straight away. There was no better way of beginning my time here than getting 90 minutes under my belt. It’s been great for me on the pitch getting to play 35 games. I came here to get game time and I have managed to do that to, what I feel, a good standard.

I am so relieved to be able to leave the Club with their safety secured. I may have only been on loan but I knew how much it meant to everyone and to myself, so I’m delighted to maintain Saints top flight status. St Johnstone are a top flight Club without shadow of a doubt. Macca came in and has done brilliantly, he really lifted the place and did everything he could to give us that final push over the line.

Moving to Perth was a bit different from what I’m used to but it’s a beautiful place and I’ve loved everything about it. I really wanted to get involved as much as I could with the community when I came up here. As I’ve got older it’s something I realised just how important it was. I think as footballers we sometimes forget how much we can give back to kids and fans. I’ve really enjoyed that side of it and giving back where I can.

I have to thank the fans. They were incredible from the day I arrived and really made me feel welcome. The fans always make a brilliant noise wherever they go. It’s one thing I noticed most about this Club is the community and fan base. They have always been behind us even during the tougher times during the season. A massive thank you to the fans, this Club is one that will always have a place in my heart and I will keep an eye on.

I was really lucky to have a good group of lads, the environment around the place was great. The goalkeepers I worked with have been massive for me this season in getting me to where I want to be. I know Ross will be able to show what he can do when given his opportunity and I look forward to seeing him progress.

Jack Wills, Craig Hepburn and the two young lads Kyle Thompson and Calum Barlow all have great chances to kick on and be great goalkeepers. Elliott Parish is a top man as well. He is definitely someone I’ll stay in touch with, he was incredible since he came in as coach. Also, Scott Findlay who was brilliant to have around the place and would definitely text me if I forgot to mention him.

I have to mention the men that brought me in, Callum Davidson and Paul Mathers who I have so much respect for. I can’t say a bad word about either and I wish them all the best.

I’m gutted I won’t be able to get to say a proper goodbye to the fans but it’s time to go home and spend some quality time with my family who, unfortunately, I haven’t seen much this year. I just want everyone to know how much I appreciate the love and support you gave me this season. It was an experience I will never forget.

All the best,

Remi
