The new keeper gives his thoughts on his move to Saints

Realistic but determined – that’s the best way to describe new goalkeeper Euan McLean’s attitude to playing first team football at McDiarmid Park.

The 22 year old signed a two year deal at Perth yesterday, ending a four year association with Dundee United, and spoke about his thoughts on the move to McDiarmid Park.

“I’m delighted to be joining Saints and it is nice to have it sorted out quickly – it means I can relax while on holiday and not be worrying about what the future holds. There is no way I could let the chance of coming to Saints go – I have great respect for both Derek McInnes and Tony Docherty and I like what they are trying to achieve here.”

Of course, Euan knows that in order to fulfil his ambition of playing regular first team football he is going to have to displace another former Tannadice keeper in the shape of Alan Main and the 6’ 2” stopper is open about the challenge ahead.

“I am really looking forward to working with Alan and I am sure my game will improve further working with him. However, I’m not here to play second fiddle but I realise it will be hard to displace him from the team because he has been superb. He’s one of the best in Scotland over a long period of time and his form last season was terrific but I’m determined to give it my best shot.”

Euan, who revealed that United loan midfielder Greg Cameron also influenced his decision to join Saints, has one Scotland Under 21 cap to his name although could add to that as early as next Tuesday when Scotland take on Norway at Rugby Park.

The Scotland Squad for the challenge match against Norway at Kilmarnock next week is:

Goalkeepers Greg Fleming (Gretna) Euan McLean (St Johnstone)

Defenders Paul Caddis (Celtic) Scott Cuthbert (Celtic) Ryan O’Leary (Kilmarnock) Alex Pearce (Reading) Thomas Scobbie (Falkirk) Lee Wallace (Heart of Midlothian)

Forwards Graham Dorrans (Livingston) Calum Elliot (Heart of Midlothian) Steven Lennon (Rangers) Robert Snodgrass (Livingston)
