Tommy looking forward to Ibrox battle

Tommy Wright takes his side to Ibrox on Sunday and the manager is looking forward to another tough test in the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership.

Both sides are locked on the same points after five league matches, with Rangers bouncing back from their defeat to Celtic with a convincing 4-0 victory over Dundee last weekend.

Saints continued their unbeaten home league record last time out with a 1-1 draw against last season's Premiership runners-up Aberdeen.

In the club's last four visits to Ibrox, Tommy's men have lost just once, with a draw and two victories to their name. The last trip to Ibrox in the 2017/18 campaign saw Saints run out 3-1 winners.

Looking ahead to Sunday's match, Tommy says he has been impressed by Rangers but believes his side can be more than a match for Steven Gerrard's men.

"I think they've done very well," Tommy said, "but you'd expect them to have improved with the resources they have at their disposal.

"Steven obviously adds a lot of pulling power there too. They've done incredibly well in Europe so we're well aware that it will be a difficult game.

"I've said it all season so far - we just want to focus on ourselves and how we can impact the game - I know that if my players play to the best of their ability we can be a match for Rangers."

The Ibrox side have been playing on the continent and faced Spanish outfit Villarreal last night. However, the manager doesn't think that makes much of a difference for Sunday's fixture.

"I don't think it really means much," he said, "Rangers have a big enough squad to cope with the demands of a Thursday-Sunday schedule.

"If we start well and make things very difficult for them then I think we've got a great chance. I don't think fatigue will come into it from their perspective at this early stage in the season.

"We've had a good record at Ibrox in recent times and we're all looking forward to going there again. If we can keep our performance levels up then there's no reason why we can't go to places like Ibrox and win."

On the injury front, Tommy will have almost a full squad to choose from on Sunday although there is likely to be three absentees.

"Liam Gordon has taken part in some aspects of training this week," the manager said, "but I think he's doubtful for Sunday just in terms of general fitness.

"Murray is Murray and he's already started work on the bike. He's coming along nicely with his rehabilitation.

"Brian Easton is the only other player sidelined and we're still waiting to hear back from the consultant regarding his injury so we can get a plan in place for him."

Sunday's match is all-ticket and Saints fans are reminded that they cannot purchase tickets on the day at Ibrox.

The McDiarmid Park Ticket Office will open between 10AM and 11AM on Sunday morning to purchase last minute tickets for the match.
