PREVIEW | Saints v St Mirren

26th March 2019

Tuesday 26 March 2019

We welcome St Mirren to McDiarmid Park tomorrow in the Ladbrokes Premiership in our rearranged fixture from Saturday 16th March after the match was postponed due to heavy rain and snow.

It's the first of the final four games before the split and it's a busy schedule which sees the club play Wednesday-Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday as we look to make a last push to secure a top six place.

Speaking to the club's official website, the manager said that he still believes his side can finish in the top six come the split but that three points against St Mirren tomorrow night is a must to keep those chances alive.

"I still believe we can do it," Tommy said, "but we need to start winning games and that begins tomorrow.

"If we don't win the match we can pretty much wave goodbye to our chances as it will leave us with a lot to do.

"We're more than capable of going on a run though and I think it's probably going to require us picking up 10 points from our remaining games which we can do.

"We've been on a bad run and it's been individual errors in games that have cost us. In addition to that we haven't made the most of our possession by creating chances in the final third.

"If we're going to put things right we need to refocus and get the three points against a St Mirren side that's fighting for their lives."

The manager was frustrated at the postponement of the initial match but the extra break has allowed his number one 'keeper Zander Clark to return to full training.

However, he does have a few injury concerns ahead of the rescheduled fixture.

"Obviously we would have liked the fixture to have gone ahead before the break," the manager said, "but there is nothing we could do about the weather.

"Training has been excellent though and we need to take that positivity from our sessions into the match.

"Zander will come back in and that's great because he's been excellent for us this season. There's every possibility he would have played in the initial fixture but there's no doubt it would have been a risk.

"Now the risk has been taken out of it and he's had longer to train. We also had a training match last week and he came through that without any issues.

"We will however be without a few players who have picked up injuries since. Blair Alston and Callum Hendry both have groin problems and will miss the match.

"There's also a doubt over David Wotherspoon who has taken a knock to his ankle so we'll assess him. On top of those three we have Niall Keown and Drey Wright out too."

The manager is expecting to make a few changes and says he's had a team in mind for this fixture since the initial fixture postponement earlier this month.

And he says that his players have shown him in training over the past week that they too believe that the top six isn't beyond the club yet.

"I've had my starting eleven in my head for this one for a while now and there will be a few changes. Hopefully we can put in a performance for the full 90 minutes.

"The players are raring to go and they've shown me in training that they believe. Now they've got to go out and do it on the pitch. If any of them don't believe then they shouldn't be here.

"We're more than capable of going on a run for the final four games but it all starts with tomorrow night. Then you've got a six-pointer away to Motherwell before Dundee come here.

"Hopefully we can get positive results and take it to the last game before the split away to Kilmarnock and at that stage anything can happen."

Tomorrow's match is a 7:45PM kick-off at McDiarmid Park and the match is LIVE on Saints TV. The co-commentator tomorrow evening is former Saints and Northern Ireland defender Danny Griffin.
