It is with much sadness that the club has been informed this week of the passing of former midfielder Joe McGurn aged just 52 after a brave fight with cancer.

Signed from East Kilbride Youth Club in 1983, Joe’s tough-tackling approach won him many admirers in Perth – perhaps less so amongst opponents and the refereeing fraternity! – and he appeared for the team over the course of four seasons between 1984 and 1988. 55 starts and 20 appearances from the bench brought 7 goals and were it not for several injuries, his impact would have been much greater. Alloa Athletic and Stenhousemuir were his ports of call after leaving Perth but further injury including a broken leg limited his impact these clubs.

At a time when St Johnstone’s fortunes were pretty low, Joe was a prime example of a young player with plenty to prove and no little ability and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family at this sad time.
