Blair Alston made all the difference in yesterday's 2-0 victory against Aberdeen, coming off the bench to score a wonder goal at Pittodrie.

Having started and scored in midweek against Hearts, some may have been surprised to see Blair dropping to the bench but the midfielder says it showcases just how good the squad is this season.

"Obviously I'd rather have started the game," Blair said, "but that's the same for any player who is on the bench.

"We've got a great squad this year filled with quality and we have a lot of strength in depth so there's always going to be games where you miss out or have to be content with coming on off the bench.

"It's all about making the most of it when you get your chance and hopefully I've done that by scoring a couple of goals over the past two games.

"It was a fantastic result for us yesterday. We started really well then I felt Aberdeen began to get a bit of control without really causing much of a threat.

"Joe managed to get his goal with a great header and then I've been able to get the second and we just saw the game out from there. It's a big win for us and shows just how good we are this season."

The 2-0 victory extends Saints' unbeaten run to eight games and Blair says that there's a great atmosphere in the dressing room just now.

"We went through the sticky spell earlier in the season," he said, "and it did have the boys feeling a bit down about it.

"It just shows the character we have in that squad though with the response. We won five games on the bounce and now we're unbeaten in eight.

"We want to keep the run going and to win as many games as possible between now and the end of the season and we'll see where that takes us."

Blair also spoke of his manager - who signed a new contract on Friday - and believes that Tommy Wright's extension is great news for the players and fans alike.

"It's massive," said Blair, "it's the most successful period in the club's history and the manager has been a huge part of that.

"Getting him tied down on a long-term deal shows great intent that the club wants to keep a hold of him. Obviously it will please the Saints fans as well to know the manager will be here for a good while yet.

"For the players it gives us all confidence and stability knowing that we're going to be working under him for the next few years too."
