SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL: HIBERNIAN 2-1 SAINTS

26th July 2016

St. Johnstone fell to a 2-1 defeat to Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup semi finals at a wintry Tynecastle Stadium.

The Edinburgh side took the lead through a controversially awarded penalty by Jason Cummings after 29 minutes. Referee Steven McLean pointed to the spot despite claims from Chris Millar and his team mates that Hibs' Liam Henderson had went down in the box without any contact.

However, Joe Shaughnessy hit back with a superb header from a set piece only four minutes after falling behind. It took Saints into the dressing room level at half time.

But Hibernian were to score again and seal their first League Cup final place since 2007, when Josh McGinn's effort found its way into the corner of the net with 16 minutes remaining.

Saints also had chances for themselves in the second half, most notably through a Steven Anderson shot and Simon Lappin free kick which hit the top of the cross bar, but couldn't find a way to break down the Hibees defence to force the match into extra time.

Next up for St. Johnstone is a home match with Aberdeen in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Saturday.
