LIAM GORDON DELIGHTED AFTER KNOCKING CELTIC OUT OF CUP

26th July 2016

Following a fantastic victory for St Johnstone under 20s against Celtic in the 'Little Big Shot' SFA Youth Cup, the Saints Captain, Liam Gordon, gave his views on the game.

“I thought it was a great performance from all the boys, we dug deep. The second half performance, I thought we dominated it, it just shows you because big Jordan Miller didn’t have anything to do, no saves to make. I thought we thoroughly deserved the win and it is good to progress into the next round”.

Liam put in a very strong performance in central defence, along with his partner, current East Fife loanee, Jason Kerr.

“I love playing next to big Jason, it’s so good when you have someone next to you that you can trust and you can believe in. We always cover each other and we have a good understanding of each other’s game, it’s brilliant to play next to him”.

Celtic played with Calvin Miller upfront on his own for the majority of game, and Liam felt the defence dealt with him well.

“It’s always good playing against one striker because somebody can go in front and someone behind. They had the big boy (Luke) Donnelly just drop in and playing off him as a number 10, that makes it a bit trickier for the central midfielders”.

Saints conceded a goal when Regan Hendry’s corner into the box found the head of defender Jamie McCart after 22 minutes.

“It’s a pet hate of mine; losing a goal from a set piece because you work so hard and it is such a easy type of goal to prevent”.

George Hunter got Saints back into the game with a sublime effort from long range and then scored what turned out to be the winner from a Paul Simpson corner early in the second half.

“It was good, I’ve seen him do that a few times in training, it was a great finish. He got two important goals for us and I’m delighted for him”.

Liam hasn’t played many games for the Under 20’s due to being out on loan at Elgin along with Connor McLaren and Mark Hurst. However, the Perth-born centre half will feature more often in the second half of the season for the Development side after completing his loan spell at Borough Briggs earlier this month.

“I played last week against Dundee in our 2-1 win so this is my second game since I’ve come back from my loan, I’m enjoying it, enjoying playing with such a good team and a team that I believe can do very well this season and especially in the rest of the cup games”.

As a result of their victory over Celtic, Saints will now play Motherwell at home in the Quarter finals.

“Everyone in this league at our age level, I believe that we can beat them or give them a good game. Motherwell will be a tough game, it always is against them, but I believe that we can come away from that game into the next round, but we will just take each game as it comes”.
