Internationals: Saints round-up

A productive international break saw three St Johnstone players representing their countries.

Goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov, midfielder Dan Phillips and defender Sam McClelland (currently on-loan at Dundee United) were all in action over the past ten days.

Here we take a look at how the three international Saints got on…

Dimitar Mitov (Bulgaria)

Mitov enjoyed a successful trip to Azerbaijan where he featured for Bulgaria at the FIFA Series Tournament in Baku.

The goalkeeper played 90 minutes as his country defeated Tanzania 1-0, and he pulled off some key saves during the contest.

Mitov was then rested during Bulgaria’s second game as they drew 1-1 with hosts Azerbaijan.

Dan Phillips (Trinidad and Tobago)

Midfielder Phillips was on the end of an unfortunate defeat for Trinidad and Tobago as they faced off against Canada in the Copa America Play-In.

A place in the prestigious tournament was on the line but unfortunately for Dan and his teammates, they were defeated 2-0, despite a battling performance.

Cyle Larin and Jacob Shaffelburg were on target for Canada in the match that took place in the Toyota Stadium in Texas.

Phillips played 90 minutes and impressed in the middle of the park against the likes of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

Sam McClelland (Northern Ireland U21s)

Defender Sam McClelland joined up with Tommy Wright’s Northern Ireland U21s over the international break.

The on-loan Dundee United man played in a 3-0 defeat against the Czech Republic in a friendly last Thursday.

It was a difficult test for the youngsters, and they will be looking to improve when they return to competitive action on Tuesday, March 26.

Next up for the U21s is a UEFA Euro 2025 qualifier against Serbia in the Gradski Stadion Dubocica in Leskovac, with a 6pm start UK time.
